This tutorial explains how to install the sound under Debian. The sound will be installed and configured with a tool called alsamixer.
This tutorial is intended for people under Debian or distributions based on it (Ubuntu, Xandros ...). All commands in this tutorial are executed as root. (su command). It does not require any prerequisites.
Installation of alsamixer
To install alsamixer, you just need to install the packages: alsa-base, alsa-source and alsa-utils. To do that, execute the following command:
apt-get install alsa-base alsa-source alsa-utils
Configuration of alsamixer
Even if alsamixer detects your sound card with the help of the BIOS, sometime it is not able to detect the type of your sound card. Therefore, you need to configure alsamixer in order to know the type of your sound card. To do that, execute the following command:
options snd-hda-intel model=auto
In the above configuration file, the type of the sound card is Intel. If you have another type of sound card, you just need to modify « intel » (for example: snd-hda-ati ou snd-hda-nvidia).
Configuration of the sound
We will now configure the sound in order to have a good sound. To do that, execute the following command:
