Configure Internet Explorer in order to use a proxy

This tutorial explains how to configure Internet Explorer in order to use a proxy when navigating on the web.


This tutorial is intended for people who are using Internet Explorer. We consider that the IP address of the proxy server is and that the port number is 80.

In order to use a HTTP proxy with Internet Explorer, you need to modify the internet options les options n order that it doesn't access directly to the web but uses a proxy.

Internet Explorer configuration

  • In Internet Explorer – Click on ToolsInternet Options.
  • Click on Connections tab.

The following window should be displayed:

  • Then, click on LAN Settings.

Then, change the settings like that:

You can activate the check box « Bypass proxy server for local addresses » if you want to bypass the proxy server when you connect local computers (this will improve the performances).

When the configuration is finished, click on Ok.

To test if the proxy is used by Internet Explorer, you just need to browse a web page like for example:
